How to Water a Velvet Calathea

Humidity: The Most Important Factor for Velvet Calathea Health

Misting provides short-term humidity relief but is the least effective long-term solution.
The humidity boost from misting lasts only a short time before evaporation returns the air to its original dryness.
Misting also carries some risk of promoting fungal issues on the velvety leaf surface if the leaves remain wet in poor airflow conditions.
If you mist, do it in the morning so the leaves dry before evening.
Bathroom placement works well for this plant if the bathroom receives enough natural light.

Brown or crispy leaf tips combined with a white crust on the soil surface indicates fertiliser salt build-up.
Stop feeding, flush the soil and wait at least four to six weeks before resuming at a lower concentration.
Signs of Under-fertilising
Pale, washed-out leaf colour during the growing season in a plant that is receiving adequate light, or very slow growth across spring and summer, suggests insufficient nutrition.
Begin a monthly feeding programme and consider repotting into fresh compost if the plant has been in the same mix for two or more years.
Repotting Velvet Calathea

After removing the plant from its pot, gently tease apart the root ball to separate it into two or more sections, each containing several healthy stems and a good portion of the root system.
Avoid cutting through the roots with a blade unless they are too entangled to separate by hand; clean separation causes less shock than cutting.
